[David's about six months into his stay on the Barge and he's... frankly unimpressed. And a little bored. And a little annoyed with certain developments, so long as we're being totally honest, and after having a while to sit on it and think over the issue, he's turning on his communicator.]

In the past few months, two wardens have been demoted, [And both of them wardened people with his face, which is. Just weird. But there have been stranger freak coincidences in their lives, so.] and I've found myself wondering: why is it that inmates are subjected to such heavy questioning and scrutiny when they first arrive, and afterward, while wardens are almost automatically afforded a certain amount of trust by their peers?

Obviously, for the most part, it would seem that that trust hasn't been misplaced, but two demotions is still less than reassuring. Why should one put trust in any warden when they, too, have the potential to become an inmate?

I'm simply curious.

[That is...actually a really good question. It actually makes Snow take a minute to scrutinize her own reactions to others. She would like to say she doesn't judge either party differently, but she knows that's not true. She asks more questions of inmates than she does wardens about where they come from and what's happened in their lives though she doesn't feel like it's really harsh questioning.]

You raise an important question.

I only ask questions when I am curious and trying to understand how someone could have come to the place they are now. I try not to pass judgment on their choices or actions in the past when I can help it.

I believe the assumption is that wardens are not in need of any help though it would appear that's both a false and dangerous one to make.

I did trust them when I came in. I thought it'd be like with my job back home, everybody would work together. But there was a lot of different mindsets, priorities. Now I just know that usually a warden is gonna have more resources available to them than an inmate.

You upset about what happened to yours? As upset as you can be, anyway?

It's still David. Felix is an iota less convinced that David is going to commandeer the ship and murder them all, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still think it might happen.

Because people want to trust whoever seems like an authority figure, even when that's a frakking terrible idea.

As much as, on principle, I hate to agree with anyone with your face... [ A shrug. Look, you can finish the rest of that sentence. Also hi, apparently Pietro has decided to stop avoiding you and will now act like this is the most natural thing in the world, zero fucks given. ]

However, to be frank, I would not put my trust in anyone here unearned, warden or not. The only reason they get to interrogate us and not vice versa is simply because they are in power.

I'm perfectly aware of that.

I don't particularly trust them, and I don't expect them to trust me. [He knows intimately that wardens are not necessarily moral paragons.] But I do expect that, on the whole, members of the warden population are somewhat less likely to murder me for sport, or vengeance, or for their science project.

Warden's are admitted on a criteria. Any trust lies solely with the likelihood Warden's will continue to meet that criteria.

But everyone, wardens and inmates alike, have the potential to change for the worse and harm you in the transition. You might as well not trust anyone at all, regardless of whether or not they deserve it. Do you agree?

As I've said repeatedly, I haven't been given much reason to trust anyone.

Inmates should totally get to see their Warden's file. I know some guys that already do that, but seriously, if there's something fucked-up about your Warden, wouldn't you want to know about it?

I would assume other wardens would want to know as well.

They shouldn't. Not as a whole, I mean. And people shouldn't distrust Inmates as a whole, either. You can't just...draw hard lines like that. We're all people.

Designations have been established for a reason.

While you are correct in your line of thinking--that no one, regardless of status, should be implicitly trusted from the start--most organic beings are inherently inclined to place trust on those who have been assigned a Leadership Role, and distrust in those who are here for actions deemed worthy of Punishment.
