[David's about six months into his stay on the Barge and he's... frankly unimpressed. And a little bored. And a little annoyed with certain developments, so long as we're being totally honest, and after having a while to sit on it and think over the issue, he's turning on his communicator.]

In the past few months, two wardens have been demoted, [And both of them wardened people with his face, which is. Just weird. But there have been stranger freak coincidences in their lives, so.] and I've found myself wondering: why is it that inmates are subjected to such heavy questioning and scrutiny when they first arrive, and afterward, while wardens are almost automatically afforded a certain amount of trust by their peers?

Obviously, for the most part, it would seem that that trust hasn't been misplaced, but two demotions is still less than reassuring. Why should one put trust in any warden when they, too, have the potential to become an inmate?

I'm simply curious.

Well, for one, I don't actually expect anybody to trust me without me proving I'm worthy of that trust, so it'd be pretty stupid for me to tell you why to trust. That's just not how it works.

Not exactly. We had a history of overall positive interaction even before we were assigned, and as she is also an artificial life form, I hoped she would [This doesn't really feel like the best way to put it, because Aya had seemed find with her station in life. That said, she was also treated like a person, not a tool, so perhaps that was to be expected.] understand.

Are you seriously suggesting those are in any way equal?

No. Wardens have power over inmates. Too much. Completely different thing, and David's right about that.

I'm not saying they're equal, but they are related. If a warden and his inmate don't trust each other, they won't get anywhere.

That still falls to the warden, though.

And not every inmate is interested in graduation, besides.

I'd like it if there were other options, frankly, but at this point I don't see them.
