[David's about six months into his stay on the Barge and he's... frankly unimpressed. And a little bored. And a little annoyed with certain developments, so long as we're being totally honest, and after having a while to sit on it and think over the issue, he's turning on his communicator.]

In the past few months, two wardens have been demoted, [And both of them wardened people with his face, which is. Just weird. But there have been stranger freak coincidences in their lives, so.] and I've found myself wondering: why is it that inmates are subjected to such heavy questioning and scrutiny when they first arrive, and afterward, while wardens are almost automatically afforded a certain amount of trust by their peers?

Obviously, for the most part, it would seem that that trust hasn't been misplaced, but two demotions is still less than reassuring. Why should one put trust in any warden when they, too, have the potential to become an inmate?

I'm simply curious.

[Maybe.]

What would you suggest as a solution?

[She's a little surprised by that answer. Most people who have a complaint regarding the treatment of inmate versus the treatment of the wardens wouldn't respond in a way that would actually ask for equality.]

What about asking fewer questions of the inmates?

I do not. But I do think more trust should be extended towards the inmates until they give reason for otherwise.

You cannot expect trust to be built between two people if one is unwilling to extend even a little initially.

That extends also to the inmates as well. I know many are frustrated by the mistrust extended by the wardens, but many of them are disinclined to trust at all. It's understandable, but it's not conducive for the changes many of the inmates would like to see in the way wardens treat them.

Both wardens and inmates must change their behaviors. The wardens should take the first step due to the power they have over the inmates, but the inmates must also be willing to relent some as well.

That is my hope.
