We do not have such a day where I come from, but we still must respect our parents. They are the ones that are to shelter us from what would bring us harm. They are sure that we have every opportunity we possibly could take advantage of.

Not every parent, of course, is kind to their child. Some harm them more than they protect them. Those are not parents worthy of respect, however, and from what I understand, not what the holiday is for.
